The gold program is the name of WVU’s service learning courses and programming offered through or created/coordinated with the CCE.





Gold Courses


SRVL: WVU service learning courses offered through the CCE. These courses are planned, taught, graded, and assessed by the program coordinator of the Center. Course credits range from 1-6 hours, depending on the academic rigor and the depth of the project design.

MDS: Multidisciplinary Studies capstone students are placed through the CCE for their service learning experience. The CCE provides one-on-one consultation to each student in order to provide the best possible match for the graduating student.

Adventure WV: Students in this alternative orientation program are placed with community partners to provide meaningful service while fulfilling the requirements of the Adventure WV program. Most of the service opportunities involve environmental placements focusing on outdoor activities.

SOS: Students enrolled in this special upper-level probation program are placed in service learning experiences that match the major, the skills, and the need of the community.

WMST: Women?s Studies capstone students are placed through the CCE for their service learning experience. The CCE connects community partners to the classroom in order to provide a presentation/selection style format for the students.

SOWK: Social Work 322 students are placed through the CCE with community partners in order to fulfill course requirements regarding teamwork, community needs, and social work theory.

ORIN/UNIV: University 101 courses and alternative Orientation courses are sponsored by the CCE through funding, planning, partnership assignments, or student placements. These courses differ each semester, but the service learning model is always incorporated.

PHAR: Pharmacy Practicum courses are jointly planned and taught by School of Pharmacy faculty and the CCE. This three-semester program offers pharmacy students the opportunity to attend a Service Learning Fair during class release time, as well as one-on-one interviews with participating community partners.

LDR: The Leadership Studies capstone course is jointly planned and taught by the Leadership Studies Program and the CCE. The CCE connects students with Leader Mentors for a one-on-one mentoring experience that still provides meaningful service to the university, business leaders, and community non-profit directors.

PUBA: PUBA 730 graduate student placements are coordinated through the CCE with non-profit community agencies to do applied research. The community is polled to determine the need of this research and the most significant needs are addressed through this service learning course.

EDUC: EDUC 617 students are coordinated through the CCE to provide meaningful program evaluation to local non-profit, education-based entities. The CCE connects the community partner with the course participants, serving as a liaison for both parties.


Gold Programming

Community Professional Development: The CCE provides professional development sessions for community directors, volunteer coordinators, service learning personnel, or other staff. The sessions focus on educating the community about the academic differences between volunteering and service learning, as well as helping the community to develop their yearly needs into viable service projects for WVU students.

Faculty/Staff Development Sessions: The CCE provides development sessions for WVU departments, WVU regional campuses, and other higher education institutions in the state and region. Sessions focus on implementing meaningful, rigorous academic outcomes connected to service in the community, incorporating reflective writing and dialogue in the classroom, defining community need, and assessing student learning.
