Make a Difference Day

This annual event is co-sponsored by the United Way of Monongalia and Preston Counties and the Center for Civic Engagement. The event takes place in October and brings together students and community members to participate in fall service projects. The day is starts with a kick-off breakfast for volunteers before they disburse throughout the community to engage in their projects.
Alternative Break Trip

The Center for Civic Engagement sponsors an alternative break trip every fall to correspond with the Thanksgiving holiday break. The trips are service based and take place at different locations each year.
Random Acts of Kindness Week
February 9-13, 2009
Each year, West Virginia University joins with the United Way to sponsor Random Acts of Kindness Week in February. During this special week, members of the WVU family are encouraged to practice kindness around campus. Special events take place throughout the week that highlight the generosity of our University and the students, faculty, and staff that make it so unique. The Center for Civic Engagement coordinates the program for WVU.
President’s Volunteer Service Awards

The President?s Volunteer Service Awards recognize the very best of volunteerism and service learning at WVU. Students who have completed over 100 hours of service during a calendar year are eligible to receive the award. The program is sponsored by the President?s Council on Civic Participation. Each recipient receives a certificate signed by President George W. Bush and a lapel pin. The Center for Civic Engagement serves as WVU?s certifying organization. In 2007, 184 students were presented with the honor.
CCE Student Organizations Forum with the President
March 25, 2009
The Center for Civic Engagement sponsors the annual Student Organization Forum at Blaney House, Home of the President. During the Forum, organizations share success stories from service projects they have completed during the previous year. The event provides an opportunity for Administrators to hear from student leaders.
Student Service & Civic Engagement Conference
March 6-8, 2009
The Annual West Virginia Student Service and Civic Engagement Conference is a gathering of student leaders from across the state of West Virginia. The conference joins young people with top leaders from service learning and political organizations around the state. There will be training sessions, workshops, forums, and hands-on-service. The conference also provides access to new ideas and service projects. It allows all participants to establish meaningful relationships throughout the state. The conference is sponsored by the Center for Civic Engagement.

Week of Engagement
April 13-17, 2009
The Week of Engagement takes place every April to coincide with National Volunteer Week. The week begins with a kick-off event. Student Organizations take part in The Challenge to complete the most service hours during the week. On Friday, student organizations and community partners gather on the Mountainlair Plaza to celebrate service and share success stories during the Day of Engagement.
Global Youth Service Day
April 25, 2009
On this special day, young people from across campus and our community engage in service projects to build a better West Virginia. The event, which is sponsored by Youth Service America, takes place across the globe and involves millions of young people. Special events are planned across the community to showcase the projects. Governor Joe Manchin signs an Executive Proclamation declaring the day.
