About the CCE

WVU, throughout its history as an institution, consistently embraces a long tradition of commitment to community involvement through volunteerism, service learning, and outreach efforts. Established in the 1990’s the Office of Service Learning Programs centralized this effort and supported WVU students in completing thousands of service hours to external communities.

Spring 2006 marked the expansion of the Office of Service Learning to the Center for Civic Engagement. Although the fundamentals of engagement and service remain, WVU and the CCE are making a joint effort to reinvest in experiential learning and prepare students with future endeavors awaiting graduation.

Mission

  • Raising campus consciousness of the importance of civic engagement for an educated, democratic citizenry;
  • Developing and organizing service learning and volunteer opportunities for students and faculty;
  • Consulting with academic units on implementing civic engagement into curricula;
  • Assessing civic engagement activities across campus.

Vision

The vision for the Center for Civic Engagement is clear: Connect the university and the surrounding communities. We will achieve this vision with the following goals:

  • Connecting WVU students, staff, administrators, and faculty with external communities
  • Accentuating formal standards of instruction with hands-on opportunities for students to apply knowledge acquired in collegiate courses.
  • Planning ongoing engagement and service projects at local, national, and international levels.
  • Offering physical, financial, and human resources to support effective programs of engagement and service.
